Telephone Counseling

Telephone Counseling is designed for people who have completed a course of clinical psychotherapy and want to continue their personal growth. Often people find that psychotherapy was useful in helping accept their circumstances, overcome symptoms and problems, and move toward a more meaningful life. Although psychotherapy is completed many feel that there is more that could be done.

What we do in psychotherapy is treat a neurosis. Neurosis in an older term that psychotherapists used to describe how a person’s biology, psychology, and sociology limited that person’s quality of life (and those around them). Neurosis can be viewed a failure in personal growth.

Psychotherapy can eliminate, reduce, or at least, diminish a person’s neurotic style of living. When the neurosis is no longer limiting a person’s vision a creative power is released that encourages an inner striving. This striving has variously been described as a striving for significance, completion, unity, wholeness, meaning, self-actualization, and purpose. My own preference is to see this process as a striving for valued living. That is to say, as the unmet needs of childhood, the body’s inferiorities, and social circumstances no longer dominate a person’s life they move toward their chosen values. These chosen values are those experiences that make a person become their best selves. In fact, a person soon discovers that if they do not strive for a valued filled life their neurotic style of living returns.

Telephone Counseling is a way of guiding a person to choose and commit to those values and goals that make their best self possible. Telephone Counseling uses many of the same procedures as psychotherapy. The aim is no longer the cessation of suffering but the striving for valued living.
